STATEMENT BY CY VANCE ON PASSAGE
OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY BILL IN NYS ASSEMBLY

“I applaud the New York State Assembly, and particularly Assemblyman Danny O’Donnell, for its courageous leadership in passing legislation to allow same-sex marriage in New York State. I hope the Senate will seize their opportunity to provide equal rights to New Yorkers who have been denied them for too long. I see gay marriage as a matter of fairness and equal rights. Today’s vote is a great example of how far we’ve come, but we still have a long way to go to ensure that all New Yorkers are treated equally. As Manhattan DA, I would work to build relationships between the office and the gay and lesbian communities in Manhattan, so that together we can fight injustice. Discrimination issues like the recent arrests of gay men in adult bookstores create tension and mistrust between the community and the police. That doesn’t serve justice. As DA, I would work to ensure that all of the diverse members of the Manhattan community are treated fairly under the law.”
