"Like many New Yorkers who follow government and politics, I observed today's events in Albany with great dismay. To the outside observer, it seems that partisan jockeying may once again get in the way of real progress.

"As a supporter of important state legislative matters, including marriage equality and ethics reform, I sincerely hope that our leaders can find a way to work together to serve the people of New York, without regard to partisan politics."

NEW YORK, NY – Today the Sergeants Benevolent Association, a group of 10,000 working and retired NYPD sergeants, endorsed Cy Vance for Manhattan District Attorney.

“When they make arrests, police officers want to know that they have a partner in the DA’s office that will make sure justice is served. Cy Vance will be that kind of partner. He will prosecute criminals with the integrity and fairness that he has displayed over the course of an entire career spent in the courtroom,” said Ed Mullins, President of the Sergeants Benevolent Association. “Cy's innovative vision of how to forge a greater partnership between prosecutors, police and the community is exactly the type of forward thinking that we believe will make this city an even safer place to live and work. It is clear that his experience as a prosecutor and defense attorney has given him a unique and expert-level understanding of the criminal justice system. Of all the candidates in the race, Cy is the only one with the right experience to run this office.”

"I wish to extend my condolences to the family of Officer Edwards. His untimely death is a terrible tragedy, and my heart goes out to his wife and two children. I understand that the District Attorney has said that this case will be presented to the grand jury. I strongly support a fully independent grand jury investigation, and I hope that a thorough review of the facts results in justice for all involved."

"I applaud President Obama’s nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court of the United States. The choice resonates with me particularly because of who Judge Sotomayor is: She is a native New Yorker, born and raised in Bronx public housing. She is an alumna of the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, where she worked as a prosecutor under Mr. Morgenthau at the same time I was in the office. She is a woman, the third ever to be nominated to the bench. She is the daughter of Puerto Rican parents. And above all, she is an extremely qualified jurist with a sharp legal mind and reputation for honesty and integrity. I trust that, if confirmed by the Senate, she will protect women’s rights and serve as a guardian of civil liberties.

"Today’s announcement is an important step on our path to creating a federal judiciary that is reflective of the unique patchwork of heritage, ethnicity, gender and race that we value in this country. President Obama deserves the thanks and praise of all New Yorkers, Americans and members of the legal community for his inspired choice. Congratulations to Judge Sotomayor on this great and well deserved honor."

“I applaud the New York State Assembly, and particularly Assemblyman Danny O’Donnell, for its courageous leadership in passing legislation to allow same-sex marriage in New York State. I hope the Senate will seize their opportunity to provide equal rights to New Yorkers who have been denied them for too long. I see gay marriage as a matter of fairness and equal rights. Today’s vote is a great example of how far we’ve come, but we still have a long way to go to ensure that all New Yorkers are treated equally. As Manhattan DA, I would work to build relationships between the office and the gay and lesbian communities in Manhattan, so that together we can fight injustice. Discrimination issues like the recent arrests of gay men in adult bookstores create tension and mistrust between the community and the police. That doesn’t serve justice. As DA, I would work to ensure that all of the diverse members of the Manhattan community are treated fairly under the law.”

Dozens of DA Office Alumni Support Cy Vance for Manhattan DA

NEW YORK, NY – Today a group of former assistant district attorneys, including notable lawyers Linda Fairstein and Peter Zimroth, gathered on the steps of the New York Supreme Courthouse to voice their support for Cy Vance for Manhattan District Attorney.

“Cy is a lawyer’s lawyer. Unlike his opponents, he has spent his career in the courtroom as a litigator. He has worked on tough cases with integrity, a sense of fairness and respect for civil rights,” said Linda Fairstein, best-selling crime novelist and former head of Manhattan DA’s sex crimes unit. “Cy has the unique perspective of having worked on both sides of the law, as a prosecutor and a defense attorney. He has the right experience to run an office of 500 trial and appellate lawyers because unlike the other candidates in the race, he has spent the bulk of his life as a working litigator. Simply put, he knows how to try a case – and win.”

"I strongly support the creation of a wrongful conviction task force. Judge Lippman's proposal would help to ensure that New York continues to be innovative and progressive when it comes to fair and effective criminal justice policy.

"When an innocent person is imprisoned, everyone in our society loses. Wrongful convictions are incredibly destructive, first and foremost, to the person unjustly imprisoned and their family and friends, but also to society as a whole -- because the public loses confidence in the law. That's why as Manhattan DA, I would encourage a prosecutorial culture that understands the importance of getting every case right."

Former Mayor David Dinkins Endorses Cy Vance from Steps of City HallNEW YORK, NY – Today former Mayor David Dinkins endorsed Cy Vance for Manhattan District Attorney at a press conference on the steps of City Hall, where Dinkins was the last Democrat to serve as mayor.

“Cy Vance is an accomplished lawyer, a passionate advocate and a true progressive. But most importantly, he embodies a characteristic that I believe is essential for the Manhattan DA: fairness.

“A strong defender of equal rights, Cy has spent his career advocating for fairness on all sides of the criminal justice system. He has worked as a defense attorney, standing up for those who didn’t have a voice, and as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan, prosecuting everything from street crime to white-collar fraud. He has spent more than two decades working to reform the criminal justice system and has always been a strong advocate for reforming the Rockefeller Drug Laws that give unfair sentences to non-violent drug offenders."
