STATEMENT FROM CY VANCE ON AMENDMENT EASING
CONCEALED WEAPONS RESTRICTIONS

Senate Amendment to Defense Bill Would Force Every State to
Honor Conceal-and-Carry Gun Licenses Issued by Other States

"Earlier this week, U.S. Senator John Thune sponsored an amendment to a defense bill that would force states to allow out-of-state gun owners to carry concealed weapons even in cases where local and state laws prohibit that practice. This amendment would reverse decades of work done by state and local officials to fight gun violence that has plagued our City and nation. In 2008 New York State lost 292 lives to gun violence, and New York County alone lost 31 lives. I applaud Senator Schumer for vowing to fight this amendment. As District Attorney I will make fighting gun violence a top priority, and will look for new ways to keep illegal guns out of our City and off our streets. We have made tremendous strides in New York in reducing gun violence and we must aggressively fight any action that would weaken our gun control laws and threaten the safety of our residents.”
