Praises Vance’s Experience, Commitment to Justice
Duane: “I Listened Closely to All Three Candidates, and Cy Vance is
Clearly The Best Choice for Manhattan District Attorney”
New York State Sen. Tom Duane today endorsed Cy Vance for Manhattan District Attorney. Sen. Duane, who represents New York’s 29th District, is a powerful progressive voice in the State Senate. The first and only openly gay and openly HIV-positive member of the State Senate, Sen. Duane is a champion for issues critical to the LGBT community, a leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and a strong advocate for affordable housing, health care access and other issues critical to Manhattan voters.
“Cy is a remarkable candidate and a remarkable man,” said Sen. Duane. “I met with, listened to and reviewed the plans of all three candidates. Cy Vance is committed to justice, and he is committed to fairness. Cy Vance will lead the District Attorney’s Office with dignity and courage that I believe will set the tone for our justice system. His 25 years of experience on both sides of the criminal justice system and his long record of fighting for progressive values are unmatched in this race. He has ambitious plans to prosecute and prevent hate crimes, protect tenants’ rights, and continue to hold the DA’s Office to the highest standards. He will focus new attention on the underserved LGBT community – my community -- by protecting us from hate crimes and preventing domestic violence within our community. His commitment to Community-Based Justice shows he understands the importance of community in Manhattan, an issue I have championed. I think we have similar visions of what the District Attorney can accomplish. Cy Vance will truly be the people’s prosecutor. I am proud to endorse Cy for Manhattan District Attorney.”
“I am incredibly honored to receive the endorsement of Senator Duane,” said Vance. “He has been a champion for equal rights, tenant protections, gun control, the LGBT community, sentencing reform, health care, and a host of other important progressive issues. He has been instrumental in securing increased protection from hate crimes and just treatment for the mentally ill. I look forward to working with him to make sure that Manhattan is a safer, fairer place to live. I appreciate the measured approach he took in making this decision and for allowing me to present my detailed plan for the Office before deciding which candidate to endorse.”
Duane, who serves as the Chair of the NYS Senate Health Committee, is the most recent of many prominent progressives to endorse Vance. Vance has been endorsed by the New York Times and the Daily News, current District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, the Sergeants Benevolent Association, Teamsters Local 237, RWDSU, citywide LGBT club Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, former Mayor David Dinkins, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Gloria Steinem, Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, former Comptroller H. Carl McCall, Council Member Alan Gerson, former U.S. Attorneys Robert Fiske and Zachary Carter, the founders of the Innocence Project and the founder of the Doe Fund, and many more. He is also supported by more than a hundred former ADA’s – men and women who have worked with all three candidates and know what it takes to be an exemplary District Attorney.
